in the Alhambra

As the Doors of the Alhacena from the Palace of the Infantas in the Calle Cetti Merien in Granada have been temporarily transferred to the exhibition, "Leopoldo Torres Balbás and scientific restoration", the space they normally occupy will be filled with another door, or rather fragment of a door, from the Generalife.
The piece on display is part of a larger door with two leaves, which at some stage was shortened to fit into a smaller space. The original door has been cut back both in height and width affecting the lattice-work decoration on both faces executed according to the ribbon-nailed technique (ataujerado) and covering the whole surface.
This piece has been restored in the Alhambra Woodwork Restoration workshops thanks to which we can now enjoy it in its best possible state of conservation, allowing us to appreciate the remains of the original polychrome, which shows us on the one hand the good geometric design of the Nasrid carpenters, and on the other the striking colour effect the original door must have had, quite different from what we are used to seeing in other surviving architectural pieces. Its whole surface was decorated in yellow, red, black, white etc, so providing a spot of colour on the face of the wall, similar to that provided by a tapestry.
