Guest Exhibits from The Granada Archaeology Museum
The Museum of the Alhambra presents a selection of pieces from the Archeological and Ethnological Museum of Granada within the spaces if its Permanent Exhibition in the Palace of Charles V. These pieces, of great interest in themselves, gain further significance by completing the display of the Museum of the Alhambra.
The first group, shown in room II, is made up of pieces from the Caliphate period, luxury ceramic and bronze work, that, given their form, add diversity to the collection. They all come from the Madīnat Ilbīra site, in the vicinity of Atarfe (Granada), of which elements of great importance have been preserved that show the wealth and relevance of that settlement.
The second group of elements are the remains of the facade of the Yūsufiyya Madrasah (University of Yýsuf I). They complete the display of architectural features shown in room IV belonging to public buildings of Nasrid Granada, such as the remains of the Maristan (hospital) built during the reign of Muhammad V. These vestiges provide important information regarding the institutions sponsored by the king throughout the city, and their influence beyond the borders of the sultanate. The Madrasah had professors who were highly renowned for their writings, and it invited researchers such as Ibn al-Fajjar, Ibn Lubb, Ibn Marzuk, al-Maqqari, Ibn al-Jatib, etc., who taught law, medicine and mathematics.
Room VII of the Museum houses the Vase of Antequera which, along with the Vase of the Gazelles, the Vase of Fortuny/Simonetti and the Hirsch neck, is one of the few existing examples of luxury ware known as “Vases of the Alhambra”, conceived for the palaces of the court as decorative features. Together, they reveal a historical sequence that begins in the fourteenth century, continues through the reign of Muhammad V and ends in the fifteenth century.
