Discovering the Archives of the Alhambra

The Alhambra is celebrating International Archives Day on 9th June with free guided visits to allow the public to get to know its document collections at first hand. This year as a special attraction, participants will have the chance to see the collection of drawings, which includes a number of recent acquisitions including works by Mariano Fortuny y Marsal, John Frederick Lewis, the donation by Manuel Ruiz Ruiz and the collection of engravings and documents restored for the exhibition about the Conde de Tendilla, which is scheduled for next autumn in the Palace of Charles V. Participants will also visit the restoration workshop where there will be a demonstration of the piecing together of a historical document.

The expert staff of the Archive of the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife will be responsible for accompanying those taking part in the activity, which will start at the ticket office in the Generalife. The visit will follow a route through the deposits, where documentary archives dating from the General Captaincy of the Kingdom of Granada (Capitanía General del Reino de Granada) to the current collection of the Council are stored. Participants will also have the chance to visit the new facilities with automated document stores and two rooms where researchers can access digitalized resources, collections of maps, photographs, engravings, posters and new acquisitions which day by day increase the documentary and bibliographic wealth of the Alhambra group of monuments.
