This year the show organized to fill the warm summer nights at the open-air theatre in the Generalife in the annual Lorca and Granada in the Generalife Gardens event will be En la memoria del cante: 1922, directed by Rafaela Carrasco for the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía dance company. The vocal lead will be provided by José Enrique Morente, son of Enrique Morente and the show is inspired by the famous flamenco singing competition that took place in Granada in 1922. It uses dance to commemorate some of the greatest singers in the history of flamenco and to praise the work of some of the great personalities from the world of art and culture who organized the event, including Manuel de Falla, Ignacio de Zuloaga and the young Federico García Lorca.
The show will include songs and pieces performed at the famous show in the Plaza de los Aljibes in the Alhambra over 90 years ago: the soleá by ‘El Tenazas’, the seguiriya by Manuel Torre, the toná by Caracol and the saeta by la Niña de los Peines. In the choreographies, the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía will include part of the original recordings that still survive today and will add new features that will make this show a personal and contemporary vision of an event that proved to be a turning-point in the history of flamenco.
The ticket price is 32 euros, although discounts are available for advance purchase. Tickets may be purchased for 18 euros up until the 21st July. From the first night (22nd July) onwards, there will be a special offer of 2 tickets for the price of one every Tuesday and Wednesday and there will also be discounts for the unemployed, pensioners, students, youth card and tourist pass holders and visitors to the Alhambra and Generalife, who will be able to purchase tickets for 20 euros.
