The Alhambra takes part in an international seminar on cultural landscapes in Las Médulas
Today, 24th January, the Alhambra took part in an international seminar on Cultural Landscapes: Heritage Management, which was held in the House in the Park of Las Médulas in Carucedo (León). The seminar, which is organized by the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, is part of a series of Seminars entitled “Cultural Landscapes and World Heritage” organized by the Cultural Landscapes Alliance.
In the presentation of the event, the Director-General of the Alhambra and Generalife, María del Mar Villafranca, said that “heritage is an evolving concept. The Alliance seeks to promote and support those types of heritage that are more difficult to manage and more difficult for the public to understand. If we combine our efforts, examples and good practices in the end we will all learn”.
This international seminar brings together specialists from Spain and Europe to talk about the management of cultural landscapes, both rural and urban. These experts, who hold different levels of responsibility, will be presenting various different strategies and projects. The first session was attended by members of the research team from Las Médulas (Spanish Senior Research Council) and representatives of the Andalusian Institute of Historic Heritage, Tarragona City Council and the Ministry of Cultural Assets and of Cultural and Tourism Activity in Italy.
The event began with a work session in which representatives of the different Landscapes members of the Alliance exchanged information about the objectives, approaches and experiences of the Plans for the Management of these landscapes. The Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute, which coordinates the National Cultural Landscapes Plan, also contributed to the discussion.
The current members of the Cultural Landscapes Alliance are the cultural landscapes of Aranjuez, the Alhambra and Generalife of Granada, the Palm-Tree Forest of Elche, Sintra, the Sierra de la Tramuntana in Mallorca and Las Médulas.
The main objectives of the Alliance, which was set up in 2007, are to strengthen cooperation between cultural landscapes that are world heritage sites and other places, monuments or archaeological sites with environmental and landscape values, and promote common strategies and projects for their conservation and management. Its activities and actions are publicized in various media, in publications arising from International Conferences and Seminars and on a shared website.
