Alhambra celebrates International Day for Monuments and Sites with immensely popular free guided tours
Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife (PAG) today organised a busy day of activities to celebrate International Day for Monuments and Sites. Almost 400 persons enjoyed the free guided tours through the complex, organised around the theme of this year’s campaign, “Understanding the challenges for the future”, chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
The Generalife mediaeval kitchen gardens and the interventions to the surface of the wall, the Carmen de los Catalanes villa garden, the Water Tanks, the restored glass panels of the Generalife and the Siete Suelos and Infantas Towers were thus open to the public, morning and evening, for visitors on these special tours.
The day’s activities, which aimed to give a greater understanding of the rich heritage of the royal complex, were coordinated by the PAG Conservation and Restoration Department, along with the PAG Conservation and Restoration Department and Dissemination Department, Gardens and Forests Department and Public Visits Department.
International Day for Monuments and Sites was proposed by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) on 18 April 1982, and approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO in 1983. The aim is to promote awareness about the diversity of the world’s cultural heritage, its vulnerability and the work required for its protection and conservation.
