Cuesta de los Chinos reopened

Pedestrian access via Cuesta de los Chinos has been reopened to the public today. María José Sánchez, government of Andalusia delegate for Granada, and María del Mar Villafranca, general director of Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife (PAG) were this morning briefed on the scope of the works performed on the mediaeval roadway by the PAG Garden and Woodland Preservation Service to guarantee pedestrian safety. Works began after frequent heavy rains in the spring of 2010 prompted fears of possible rockslides.
Works along Cuesta de los Chinos (also known as Cuesta del Rey Chico) were commissioned due to the deterioration of the embankments separating the Generalife Kitchen Gardens from the roadway, with the risk of irrigation water or heavy rains causing the sandy subsoil to seep through gaps in the rock and provoke rockslides.
The works were overseen by José Manuel Azañón, professor of Geodynamics with the Andalusian Institute for Earth Sciences of the University of Granada, and Francisco Javier Roldán García, researcher with the Spanish Institute for Geology and Mining Science (IGME), and performed by technicians from the Government of Andalusia Ministry of Culture.
