The Alhambra marks International Archives Day with an exhibition of documentary collections
The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife (PAG) is celebrating 9 June, International Archives Day, with an open day during which its documentary collections will be on view. Activities this year include an analysis of the interventions performed on the recently-acquired collection of Leopoldo Torres Balbás, the architect responsible for much of the restoration work carried out on the Alhambra; replicas of the paintings in the Sala de los Reyes, maps, daguerreotypes, books, etc; the ordinances of the Count of Tendilla and the documents recording the works performed to the Court of the Lions for the visit of Felipe V, normally kept in the Alhambra Provisional Archive and Library Deposit.
Those interested in taking part should register before 9 June, sending their full name and ID number to archivo.pag@juntadeandalucia.es or calling 958027943.
Participants in this open day will visit the Alhambra Deposit of Archive and Library graphic collections, home to the maps, photographs, engravings, posters, etc. generated or acquired by the PAG over the years.
The restorers will explain the changes made to a range of documents, to give visitors an idea of the technical processes involved. The last stage of the tour is a visit to the research room, where visitors will learn how to access the Alhambra Library’s online catalogue, the website of the Alhambra Archive, the Alhambra Scientific Portal in the Archive section, and databases and digitalised collections.
International Archives Day marks the day the International Council on Archives was created under the auspices of the UNESCO: 9 June 1948. The aim of International Archives Day is to promote the significance of archives in the service of research, culture, memory and transparency.
