The Spanish programme Informe Semanal, broadcasted Saturdays on TVE from 21:30 on, will transmit a special report on the Exhibition Matisse and the Alhambra, which is installed at the Museum of Fine Arts in the Palace of Charles V. In 1910, i.e. a little more than 100 years ago, Matisse undertook an exciting journey to Spain. He took the train from Paris to start this journey, which would have a great impact on his work and personality for the rest of his life.
To mark the centenary of this special journey, with scenes such as Madrid, Toledo, Seville and Granada, the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, with the collaboration of the Spanish State Agency for Cultural Actions (SEAC) and the “la Caixa” Foundation, wished to memorialise this little-known chapter of the life of the artist with a special exhibition. The exhibition is conceived to transmit the fascination Matisse felt for the Oriental world and how the encounter with the Nasrid palaces lit up the artist’s inspiration for his painting after a sad and demotivated time.
Due to the preserved letters he wrote to his wife and friends, we know about the impact the light in the rooms of the palaces, filtered through lattices, had on the artist.
