Arquitecture Curators and planning procedures of the Alhambra, subject for discussion at the Palace of Charles V
The Architecture Curators of the 19th and 20th century and the planning procedures of the Alhambra were the main subjects during the second day of the course El Conjunto Monumental de la Alhambra y Generalife: 25 años de gestión autonómica (‘Monumental Complex of the Alhambra and Generalife: 25 years of independent management’). The independent body of the Alhambra, in collaboration with Centro Mediterráneo of the University of Granada, has organized this course, which will analyze until next Friday the past, present and future of the Nasrid monument.
Juan Manuel Barrios Rozúa, Doctor in Art History and Professor at the ETSA (University School of Architecture), opened the session with a lecture in which he briefed the conservation of the Alhambra during the 19th century. Then, the floor was given to the architect Carlos Sánchez, who gave a complete picture of the monument that Modesto Cendoya has found as well as of the main interventions he carried out, starting in 1907, which was the year he came into office as Architecture Curator.
On the other hand, the architect Julián Esteban Chapapría has focused his lecture on the interventions carried out by Leopoldo Torres Balbás during the time he held the highest office of the conservation of the monument. He also emphasized the important research works Torres Balbás elaborated in the monument from 1923 to 1936.
The main subjects of the afternoon sessions of the course were the Special protection plan of the Alhambra and the Alixares, the Master Plan of the Alhambra, the revision of the Special protection plan of the Alhambra and Alixares and the renovation of the Palace of Charles V for the Museum of the Alhambra, directed by José Seguí, Pedro Salmerón, Juan Carlos García de los Reyes and Juan Pablo Rodríguez Frade, respectively.
