Cultural heritage management in the spotlight at the course “The Alhambra and the World Heritage”

In the second session of the course La Alhambra y el Patrimonio mundial (“The Alhambra and the World Heritage”), cultural heritage management was in the spotlight, analyzed by means of some concrete examples like Sintra, Atapuerca and the association Grupo Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad de España. The course has been organized by the autonomous body in collaboration with the Centro Mediterráneo of the University of Granada and will be held at the Palace of Charles V until Friday.
Fernando Roboredo, Mayor of the Portuguese town Sintra, insisted in his speech on the “responsibility” that should be assumed by the society and the institutions for the preservation of Heritage. Furthermore, the founder of Alianza de Paisajes Culturales stated that this initiative “was born as a process of reflection with the aim of a joint management to preserve these unique sites with common problems”.
Juan José Sánchez Hernández, General Director of Fundación Atapuerca, defined his institution´s working methods as a “model in knowledge management” and “…a science socialization project. We have added the intangible value of the science to the site´s management, which made more than hundred bodies get involved”. The Atapuerca site, with between 100,000 to 120,000 visits per year, is a worldwide recognized paradigm for human evolution research.
Sonsoles Guillén Ruiz-Ayúcar, Secretary General of the Association Grupo Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad de España, insisted in the fact that “this association has made the Mayors get involved in the problems of the cities and in the search for solutions. At present we are working on fire prevention, visual pollution, archaeology and urbanism in historic city centers”.
Tomorrow (Wednesday), from 10 a.m., participating experts will discuss on 25 years since the Alhambra´s declaration as a Site of World Heritage: Balance and Perspectives. Bartolomé Ruiz, Director of Dólmenes de Antequera, Miguel Ángel Troitiño, Distinguished Professor of Human Geography at the Complutense University of Madrid, and the architect Pedro Salmerón will expose different issues in relation to Heritage preservation.
