More than three billion tourists visited the monumental complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife in 2007.
The Monumental complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife has received 3,128,456 visitors during 2007, a number which breaks a new record as it surpasses 13.06% the number reached during 2006. This number includes the data of tourist and cultural activity and includes visitors to the complex who have reached 2,193,277 (1.85% more than in 2006); those that have visited free spaces, outer perimeter, Museum of the Alhambra and temporary exhibitions.
In addition, it includes the 83,328 spectators to different cultural activities, like the concerts of the International Festival of Music and Dance that takes place in the Alhambra (22,920), the Blanca Li Poet in New York show (60,000) and the 408 that enjoyed the Concert tribute to Elena Martín Vivaldi.
The Director of the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife, María del Mar Villafranca Jiménez, has presented today the report prepared by the Unit of Analysis and Data of the independent body on Tourist and Cultural Activity during 2007 and has been very “satisfied” with the results obtained, with which the nazarí monument ranks again before the El Prado Museum (2.65 million visitors) and the Sagrada Familia (with 2.64 million).
With respect to the monthly distribution of visitors to the complex, the report highlights that the day with the highest occupation was May 1st, when 100% of tickets were sold (8,100) and the least was the 30th of January with 1991 tickets. As far as the type visit most demanded, the day visit occupies the top position, with 88.10% of the cases, followed by Visit to Gardens (7.66%), night visit (2.49%) and the Tourist pass with 1.75%.
With regards to the distribution according to the type of visitor, the report specifies that individual visitors have represented 60.29% of the total, followed by organized tourism, which involves 34.19%, and institutional /cultural visits, that represents 5.52%.
The cultural landscape of the Alhambra and the Generalife has also aroused the interest of tourists. In this sense, the mentioned study indicates that the external perimeter has been visited by 173,520 people; whereas the free spaces reach a total of 88,560 visitors. It should be emphasized the important presence of Granada visitors who during 2007 have chosen the surroundings of the Alhambra for their leisure totalling 34,560 visitors.
EU residents are still the travellers with the highest number of visits to the Monumental complex of the Alhambra, with 45,03%, followed by the national tourism (32.95%) and the rest of countries (22.02). This same circumstance is repeated when dealing with visitors in group, since European visitors represent 51.91%, followed by tourism 27.87% and the rest of the world (20.22%).
The Report of the Tourist and Cultural Activity in the Monumental complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife dedicates a special section to the profile of the visitor. Most tourists who demand the Alhambra as destination are European, are between 30 and 60 years, have university studies, and a qualified job and leave the Monument with a high or very high level of satisfaction.
