Joints, gauges… in the Nasrid carpentry

The “Piece of the Month”, of October, in the Museum of the Alhambra, attempts to provide a theoretical-practical and evolutionary tour through Nasrid and Mudejar examples of the wooden joints and the methodology of handcrafted elaboration.
The joints, which are a technique to join logs by means of cuts and embroiders, can have a structural, decorative or both functions, and according to this, they follow a pattern, a system of proportional measurement, cuts and tools of traditional elaboration.
It will also be attempted to disclose the specific terminology of each union that moves away from the direct understanding of carpentry, since it is very hermetic. Terminology that in some cases has preserved its Arab origin, coexisting with others of Castilian origin; this filtration in the carpentry can be understood thanks to a parallel gremial system in the two cultures of the medieval Iberian Peninsula.
Key examples of the Nasrid carpentry and their evolution will be used as a thread of its typology, frameworks of apeinazado laces, ceilings of intricate woodwork, doors and windows, based on Granada models.
