the Evergreen Candytuft

The Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens L.)  is a perennial sub-shrub with a ground-covering habit that is native of the Mediterranean region. Its scientific name Iberis comes from Iberia, the name given to Spain by the Greeks. The second part sempervirens refers to its status as an evergreen plant. The fact that it is native to Spain means that it is well-equipped to survive our hot summers and cold winters. There is a long, deep-rooted tradition of growing this plant in the gardens of the Alhambra and Generalife. Its magnificent, pure white blossom can be enjoyed between April and June in well-drained beds protected by hedges, with plenty of sunshine.
