Pineapple Sage

Salvia elegans, commonly known as Pineapple Sage and Pineapple-Scented Sage, is a perennial shrub native to forests in high altitude regions of Mexico and Guatemala.
Its red tubular flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. In the Gardens of the Alhambra and Generalife it is a short-day plant that may not flower till late autumn.
It dies back to the ground with the first hard frost and resprouts in spring. This plant is widely used in Mexican traditional medicine, both to reduce anxiety and to lower blood pressure.
“Salvia” is derived from the Latin “salvere” (to heal), referring to the herb’s healing properties. Pliny the Elder was the first to use the name Salvia, most probably to refer to the species Salvia officinalis.
