Now that this long summer seems at last to have come to an end, and things are cooling down, we would like to recommend a book about clothing and its meaning.
Clothes are a form of communication and relation, a language in themselves. The way we dress conveys information about our age, gender, ethnic group, social class, profession and geographic origin. The book we have chosen focuses on these connotations of dress within the period from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, Islamic and mediaeval. However its main subject is the Classical Islamic world and al-Andalus in particular.
Of the varied set of articles that make up this book, we would like to highlight those that connect spinning, weaving and dressing with the world of women and by extension the links between fabric and singing, between language, warp and weft.
