Walls, towers and outbuildings of the Alhambra: a review of the changes in the Alhambra’s military and defensive structures
The walls and towers of the Alhambra are without doubt the introduction, the first impression of the Monument for anyone glancing up at the red hill on which it stands. These structures blend in with the terrain creating the Alhambra’s defining skyline, which gives it its emblematic character and personality.
Juan Antonio Vilar Sánchez, the author of the book we are recommending today, has also focused on these structures and with this research offers us a broad and at the same time concise vision of these buildings, their history, adaptations and uses.
The book is organized into four main sections:
1. The historic process.
2. The Alcazaba (Alhizán) or fortress of the Alhambra.
3. The walls around the palace area and the medina .
4. The feudal court of the Alhambra and its governors.
Each section has been explained in great detail to create a fundamental new reference book for those wanting to know more about the Alhambra Group of Monuments.
