The Vegetable Gardens of the Generalife. Agricultural landscapes of al-Andalus… In search of authenticity.
This study, which was commissioned by the Council of the Alhambra and published in collaboration with the University of Granada and the Comares publishing house, is the result of a research project undertaken by the University of Córdoba and the School of Arabic Studies (Spanish National Research Council – CSIC).
Coordinated by the researchers Esteban Hernández (University of Córdoba), and Expiración García (CSIC), the purpose of this study was to draw up a Plan for the Conservation and Management of the Vegetable-Gardens of the Generalife.
The study encompassed all the existing vegetable-gardens (Colorada, Grande, Fuente Peña and Mercería), but did not include those areas which in the past were used for growing fruit and vegetables, but are now used for modern gardens, car-parks, administration buildings, archives and other Alhambra facilities.
