Since 1996 the Alhambra and Generalife Group of Monuments has been applying a system of sustainable management compatible with the demands of the programme of conservation of its fragile building structures and its surrounding landscape, which for some time now has been accepted as a guide to good practice by the UNESCO. viene desarrollando desde 1996 un modelo de gestión sostenible de visitantes compatible con las exigencias del programa de conservación de sus frágiles estructuras constructivas y de su paisaje circundante que ha sido reconocido desde hace tiempo como guía de buenas prácticas por la UNESCO. Within this framework the need has arisen to create a New Modern Entrance and Visitors Centre which meets the needs of users. De ahí la necesidad de crear un Nuevo Acceso y Centro de Visitantes moderno que responda a las necesidades de los usuarios.
A competition was held for ideas for the new entrance, which was won by Álvaro Siza and Juan Domingo Santos. Their project fascinated experts such as François Burkhardt who defined it as “a project with many layers within a setting that has an enormous cultural and historic charge, in which the new addition must show the highest possible degree of restraint, so as to connect well with the existing structures, without visually detracting from them in any way. un proyecto con muchas capas dentro de un conjunto extremadamente cargado cultural e históricamente, donde la nueva adición debía mostrar el más alto grado de contención, a fin de conectarse con lo existente sin restarle nada visualmente”.
