COMUNICACIÓN Y PRENSA
Granada: Centro José Guerrero: TRN, Ciengramos, D.L. 2016
At the end of this month we will be entering spring and with this in mind the book we are recommending invites the reader to stroll around the city, book in hand, to discover the sculptures it describes.
. In total, it contains 42 sculptures situated in different parts of the city that were created during the 19th, 20th and even 21st centuries.
The most interesting 19th century sculptures include the monument to Mariana Pineda, in the square of the same name and the monument to Queen Isabella of Castile and Christopher Columbus, sculpted to mark the 4th centenary of the discovery of America by the Valencian artist Mariano Benlliure.
A large number of the sculptures are from the 20th century. These include among others the monument to the writer and diplomat Ángel Ganivet in the Wood of the Alhambra, which was sculpted by Juan Cristóbal González Quesada, a sculptor from Almería.
There is also a monument, in this case an obelisk, to the Granada businessman and politician, Julio Quesada Cañaveral, better known as the Duke of San Pedro de Galatino, which was commissioned by the Granada Artistic Centre and can be seen in the Jardines del Genil.
In 1948, a monument to the Emperor Charles V was built in the Plaza de la Universidad. This statue was a copy of a bronze sculpture by the Italian artists Leone Leoni and his son, Pompeo Leoni, on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid. Another copy of this sculpture commissioned by the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife was in the courtyard of the Palace of Charles V.
Undoubtedly, the greatest 20th century sculptural monument in Granada is the Triunfo Gardens and the statue of La Inmaculada.
The sculptures installed in the streets of Granada in the 21st century are no longer on a monumental scale and instead offer life-size images of interest to the many tourists who visit the city… We highly encourage you to discover these sculptures by taking a stroll along the boulevard in Avenida Constitución.
