The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife and the Comares publishing house have published a new book by Bárbara Boloix Gallardo entitled Las sultanas de la Alhambra. Las grandes desconocidas del reino nazarí de Granada (Siglos XIII), the first study dedicated solely and exclusively to the women of the Nasrid dynasty, from the 13th -15th Century and beyond, a group that have been unjustly silenced and forgotten. This book which is based on an analysis of mediaeval Arabic and Christian sources seeks to reveal to the reader for the first time hitherto unknown details such as the names and personalities of these princesses and various interesting aspects of their lives, such as the influence that some of them wielded in the politics of Granada or their intrigues to ensure that their respective sons came to power. The author also discusses other questions such as the scope of their social status and their legal capacities, and the official titles by which they were referred to. The study concludes with the spaces they occupied and their final resting-places. In short, a new view of Nasrid history as seen through the eyes of its women.
