The Alhambra hides between its walls, arches, walls or doors near 10,000 inscriptions which meaning was a little known…, up to now. The Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife and the School of Arabic Studies of Granada they have deciphered more than 3,000 histories that enrich one of the most beautiful and significant places of the monument: Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife. It is the first phase of the project Corpus epigráfico of the Alhambra, which will translate each and every of its inscriptions, an laborious research that foresees register each and every of them in DVD and now will be available in English language.
There is no winner higher than Allah (Wa-la galib illa Allah), the motto of the Nasrid dynastic, is most of the registered inscriptions between its walls. There are coranic ones as well, with fragments of the sacred book of the Islam; royal, or of praise to the sultan; dynastic, with reference to the motto of the dynasty; Religious, or brief offerings; as well as poetics. Between them the praises emphasize the sultan: Glory to our God Abu ‘Abd Allah; offerings Religious: Blessing; or you pronounce like: Be frugal in words and you will be in peace.
Besides the basic forms of Arabic writing, the cufica and the cursive one, in the Alhambra it also appears a third one, which it can name mixed, the result of combining both previous ones. For its peculiarity, the Arabic writing was not only use in architecture for giving faith of obedience to Allah, furthermore, it was used as an ornamental function, because it was replacing as far as possible the plastic arts hardly promoted on those times by the Islam.
In 2010 or 2011 will finish the translation of all the epigraphs of the monument. Once finished, all the result will be included on the only disc, in a format really useful for the reference. The Alhambra has published in whole thousand copies, on which they put to the sale in the bookshop of the monument, or soon across its website that will have a cost of 30 Euros. Furthermore, the work will be available in all the public libraries of Andalusia.
