COMUNICACIÓN Y PRENSA
This month we are recommending the catalogue for the exhibition entitled: José Guerrero "The Presence of Black, 1950-1966", organized jointly by the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife and the Guerrero Centre. The exhibition is the first in-depth monographic exploration of the painter’s American years, in which José Guerrero relinquished his previous figurative approach to art, and which had a decisive influence on the direction he followed from then on and on his own artistic voice.
Through his work, José Guerrero projected his home region of Andalucía onto an international plane. The Granada painter, to whom this exhibition pays tribute on the 100th anniversary of his birth, was undoubtedly one of the leading lights in Spanish contemporary art and was part of a generation of painters who considered that they had moved beyond the ‘historical vanguards’ to which other earlier artists from Granada had belonged.
