The 63rd Edition of the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada will be paying tribute to Ángel Barrios (1882-1964), a composer and musician from Granada, on this the fiftieth anniversary of his death. An extended programme of events has been organized in collaboration with the Musical Documentation Centre of Andalusia and the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife, in order to remember and pay tribute to the well-known musician from Granada, who won the Spanish National Prize for Operatic Works in 1951.
The activities planned include the first performance of his ballet “La preciosa y el viento” (choreography by the ballerina, Lola Greco), which will be held on the 2nd July in the Teatro Isabel La Católica; a recital by the soprano Mariola Cantarero in the Court of the Myrtles in the Alhambra, scheduled for the 24th June; the closing concert by the Orchestra from the Musical Performance Course (at the Teatro Municipal in Alhendín on 14 July and the Auditorio Manuel de Falla on 15 July), and the Musical Analysis Course in November.
The Musical Documentation Centre of Andalusia and the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife are joint custodians of the Angel Barrios Collection, bequeathed to them by his family, which contains music scores, photographs, and letters among other documents. The MDCA has also published recordings, scores and monographic essays relating to this famous composer.
