The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife adds to its artistic heritage a painting by Gustavo Bacarisas acquired at an auction
The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife has acquired the painting ‘View of the Alhambra’, by Gustavo Bacarisas (Gibraltar, 1872-Seville 1971), at a fall auction of the Arte, Informacion y Gestion (AIG), held in the Centro Cultural Cajasol, exercising a preemptive right (preferential right of purchase by the government itself) through the Culture Ministry of the Andalusia Government for a hammer price (the price at which the merchandise is knocked down to the final bidder) of 5,000.00 euros.
This painting will increase the art heritage of the Patronato de la Alhambra and Generalife. It will be joining the creation by the same author representing the Lion’s Fountain, preserved by this institution in the funds of the Angel Barrios Museum.
This acquisition will recover for the public heritage an asset belonging to a private collection in the past. The painting will be soon on display at the Museo de Bellas Artes of Granada, on the first floor of the Palace of Carlos V.
The relationship of Gustavo Bacarisas with the Alhambra is well-known. It has as a memory his signature on the Antonio Barrios appointment scroll, owner of the tavern El Polinario, on the initiative of Santiago Rusiñol, as “Art Consul of the Alhambra”, between 1909-1910, which must have been the time when the painting was made.
Gustavo Bacarisas was an Andalusian artist of recognised standing, gibraltarian by birth but established in Seville. His painting evolves from an initial colorist and intimist moment, a period to which this painting belongs to, until reaching its artistic zenith embodied in the painting preserved in the Museo de Bellas Artes of Sevilled entitled ‘Sevilla en fiesta’, within the contemporary ‘costumbrista’ (landscape and genre scenes) trend of exquisite plastic nuances.
