The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife has made an important addition to its art collection. The latest acquisition is a daguerreotype of a man posing in front of the fountain in the Lindaraja Garden. The picture dates from around 1847 judging by the type of case. In 1847 a Frenchman called Couturier who specialized in daguerreotype portraits set up shop in Granada, so it is possible that he himself took the picture.
The daguerreotype is a quarter-panel in size and the visible area is oval-shaped sitting inside a frame measuring 11.5 x 9.5 cm. Oval-shaped frame in black and gold. Dimensions of the visible area: 8.4 x 6.6 cm.
The daguerreotype is a portrait of a man posing in front of the fountain in the Lindaraja Garden. It shows a middle-aged man dressed in a frock coat and light-coloured clothing made of flax or cotton. In his right hand he is holding a broad-brimmed hat and he is leaning his right foot on the lower basin of the fountain. A powerful jet of water can be seen coming out of the top spout of the fountain.
The hat, the clothing and the vegetation in the background suggest that the picture was probably taken in spring or summer.
The man in the picture has not been identified.
