The Alhambra’s Court of the Lions on a €2 commemorative coin

The €2 commemorative coin of Spain in 2011, issued by Banco de España, under the Public Treasury, is dedicated to the Alhambra and the Generalife, which is Spain’s second property inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The coin was minted by the Royal Spanish Mint. The inner part of the coin’s obverse side depicts the Court of the Lions of the Alhambra of Granada, over the inscription “España” written in an arc, next to the year mark 2011 and the mint mark on the left. The coin´s reverse side is the €2 coin’s common side. The maximum issuing volume of these coins is 8 million, which can be increased by 20%.
Since 2010, the yearly issue of the €2 commemorative coin, authorised by the European Commission, is dedicated to Spain’s properties and sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2010, it was the Historic Centre of Cordoba; in 2011, the Alhambra, Generalife and Albaicín of Granada. Also in the next years, the coins’ national side will be dedicated to different Spanish properties or sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, in order of the year of inscription.
