The 21st Century Alhambra: “Committed to progress, allied with new technologies”. This morning, the most frequently visited monument in Spain and one of the most admired in the world played host to the presentation in Spain of Google’s latest technology: the Trekker, a backpack with a camera with a multitude of lenses which captures 360º panoramic images that will soon be accessible to millions of users all around the world.
The Alhambra is the first European monument to take part in this project, which so far has only been possible in such amazing places as the Grand Canyon, the Galapagos Islands, the Pyramid of the Sun or Venice and will soon be viewable through Google Maps.
For the Director of the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife, María del Mar Villafranca, “the Alhambra is one of those places that people dream about visiting at least once in their lives. In the future, millions of users from all over the planet will be able to make virtual visits via Street View to the Court of the Lions, the Generalife Gardens, the Court of the Myrtles or the Hall of the Ambassadors”. She also explained that initiatives like this one are part of Strategic Line nº 4 of the Master Plan for the Alhambra: the Alhambra in the Information and Communication Society”.
For his part, the Head of Street View operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Daniele Rizzeto, stated that with this project “we want to continue to bring another piece of the world closer to users and continue covering the many roads and hidden corners to uncover unimaginable wonders. From today, we can enjoy the over 8 million kilometres covered with Street View since we started in 2007 in 3,000 cities in 48 countries, including a small part of the Antarctic”.
The Trekker is a backpack weighing 15 kilos which contains an android camera system made up of 15 lenses that captures 360º images and is designed to reach places that are subject to special protection or to which access is limited, or which can only be reached on foot, as is the case of the Alhambra and the Generalife.
