The Alhambra participates in the 9th International Congress on the Restoration of Building and Architectural Heritage

The Alhambra participates in the 9th International Congress on Restoration of Building and Architectural Heritage (CICOP) that is held at the Isla de la Cartuja and the Real Alcazar de Sevilla from today to next Friday. It includes specialised workshop on heritage restoration, conservation and innovation.
For three days, the capital city of Andalusia will gather more than one thousand experts on heritage with the aim of facilitating the exchange of technical and cultural knowledge on conservation and restoration. Simultaneously to the congress, seminars and International Workshops as well as cultural performances will make CICOP 2008 in Sevilla an international meeting point for the exchange of experiences about the conservation and restoration of the Architectural and Cultural Heritage.
The Director of the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife, Mrs María del Mar Villafranca Jiménez, will participate in the Workshop on Architectural Heritage in Andalusia, to be held next Thursday 11th July at 5.00 pm; the workshop includes conferences about the Alhambra of Granada and innovation in conservation. In her presentation, the Director will present some of the ongoing action plans conducted in the Alhambra and whose main objective is “innovation as a strategy of progress in the conservation of the Monumental Complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife”.
In this sense, the Curator Architect of the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife, Mr Francisco Lamolda, and Mr Pedro Cano, from the Department of Computer Languages and Systems of the University of Granada, will explain the 3D graphical representation techniques used in the intervention conducted on the Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones).
The analysis of the building structures of the Tower of Gunpowder (Torre de la Pólvora) using non-destructive georadar techniques is another conference on the Alhambra that will take place during the event.  The Head of the Maintenance and Servicing Department of the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife, Mr Jorge Calancha, and the Professor of Electromagnetism of the University of Granada, Dr Rafael Gómez Martín, will present this conference.
The Head of the Restoration Department of the Council, Mrs Elena Correa, and the chief officer of the plasterwork workshop, Mr Ramon Rubio, will present the preventive conservation protocol that has been used in the restoration of the stalactite vaults of the Hall of the Kings (Sala de los Reyes) of the Alhambra, and will describe the procedure used to measure the parameters with probes.
