On the 18th May, the Alhambra will be celebrating International Museum Day with various activities aimed at showcasing our local heritage. During the day we will be inaugurating two temporary exhibitions: the first will have objects linked to the defence of the Nasrid warriors, and the second will contain guest pieces: Archaeological Museum of Granada, both until 15th November 2013.
We will also be holding a virtual exhibition of “Draw and Discover” in the Museum of the Alhambra, which will include all the drawings and comics done by the boys and girls from primary and secondary schools who have taken part in this activity during the year. We will also be announcing the prize-winning drawings in the “Family Drawing” category in the Museum of the Alhambra, an activity that takes place every weekend throughout the year and which has been very popular with local families.
A new feature for this year will be that the Museum of the Alhambra will be opening at night every Friday and Saturday, from the 1st May to the 30th September, from 21:00 to 23:30h. As 18th May falls on a Saturday this year, the Museum volunteers will be making guided night-time visits for all those interested in finding out more about the pieces on display.
During the month of May, the piece of the month will be “Use of parchment and paper in the Muslim world”. This activity is free and is held every Saturday from 12:00h in Room I. On this occasion, the paper restorers Rafael Lorente and Rubén Sánchez will be explaining the importance of these pieces in Hispano-Muslim culture.
During the day the honorary prizes from the Museum of the Alhambra Volunteers Association will be presented. The winners this year are Miguel Caballero and María Casas.
A group of researchers from the Stone Technology Centre will be working in the Museum of the Alhambra during the month of May. They will be making 3D versions of a number of pieces from the permanent collection, as a result of a collaboration agreement within the framework of a European Project entitled Hispano-Muslim architecture in 3D.
