The Alhambra is organizing an open day on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Convention of World Heritage of the UNESCO

The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife has organized an extensive programme of activities to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Convention of World Heritage. It will be dedicated in particular to the local community, with the idea of increasing people’s awareness of the need to “protect and care for” these sites that became members of the List in 1984. Among these activities, a free open day has been planned exclusively for the inhabitants of Granada and residents in this province. The arrangement is for 16th November (from 2 p.m. onwards) and 17th November (throughout the whole day, including the night visit) and there will be limited capacity.

Free visits are also planned to the Courtyard of the Lions every Friday and Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the months of November and December. On these visits the inhabitants of Granada and residents in the province will be able to contemplate the twelve restored lions and the result of the restoration in this courtyard, where the historical image has been restored after the paving of the ground in white marble from Macael.

The 40th anniversary of the Convention of World Heritage is being celebrated this year with the theme of World Heritage and sustainable development: the role of local communities. The criteria for the protection of World Heritage sites were established at the World Heritage Convention in 1972.
