The Alhambra and the 2nd Count of Tendilla, subjects of an anniversary debate.

The Alhambra is paying tribute to the first Governor of the Alhambra and Captain-General of the city of Granada from 1492, Íñigo López de Mendoza (1442-1515), with an International Congress organized on the occasion of the fifth centenary of his death, which will offer a foretaste of the exhibition scheduled for the end of the year at the Alhambra. Over 50 highly regarded experts will be taking part in these three days of reflection and debate, which will be held in the Palace of Charles V and in the Palace of the Madraza (in the Calle Oficios in Granada) from 5^th to 7^th November.
The Congress will be inaugurated at the Palace of Charles V on 5 November at 10:30 a.m., with lectures entitled Granada and Castile in the times of the Catholic Monarchs: the art of governance, by Professor Miguel Ángel Ladero Quesada from the Complutense University in Madrid (UCM); The Mendoza family and patronage of the arts, by Fernando Checa Cremades (UCM), and The Count of Tendilla and the Kingdom of Granada, by Professors Ángel Galán Sánchez and Rafael G. Peinado, from the University of Málaga and the University of Granada respectively.
Later a plaque commemorating the burial of the Count will be unveiled in the church of the Convent of San Francisco, currently a Parador hotel, in the very heart of the Alhambra.

The 2^nd Count of Tendilla and 1^st Marquess of Mondéjar was the Governor of the Alhambra and Captain General of the city of Granada from 1492 and was appointed Captain General of the Kingdom of Granada in July 1502, a position which his descendants also held until the expulsion of the Moriscos. He also played a leading role in Granada City Council as the head of one of the factions that vied for its control.
Soldier, diplomat, politician and humanist, don Íñigo López de Mendoza was also known as the "Great Tendilla" and was one of the decisive figures in the first years of Castilian rule of Granada.
