The Alhambra and Generalife seen through the eyes of specialists

Discover the Alhambra and Generalife through different eyes. This is the aim of the activity, which from Friday 24th October onwards, the Council of the Alhambra will be launching as part of the programme of tours guided by experts. Those interested in taking part in this activity should reserve their place in advance online (www.alhambra-tickets.es) or by phone at 902 888 001. Tickets cost 9 euros and there is a minimum age limit of 12, the normal age of first year Secondary School students.

This weekend the art and decoration of the Alhambra will be the main focus of the tours guided by specialists.  All the tours enable participants to find out more about the world of plasterwork, carpentry and geometry in the Alhambra. They will be led by Ramón Rubio, the head of the Alhambra’s plasterwork maintenance and restoration department, Gloria Aljazairi, a restorer from the Alhambra’s carpentry workshop, and Rafael Pérez Gómez, Lecturer at the Applied Mathematics Department at the University of Granada.

The defensive, domestic and palace architecture of the Alhambra will be the main theme of the tours on 31st October and 1st and 2nd November. The experts in charge of these groups will be Juan Antonio Vilar, a Doctor in History; the Expert in Muslim Art, Gaspar Aranda, and the Director of the School of Arabic Studies, Antonio Orihuela.

Those interested in finding out more about the history of the Restoration of the Alhambra Group of Monuments can sign up for the visits planned for 7th, 8th and 9th November. On these visits, the UGR Art History Professor José Manuel Domingo will be guiding a group on Decorative Restoration; the Doctor in History of Art Carlos Vílchez will be focussing on the Alhambra of Torres-Balbás, while the Alhambra of Prieto-Moreno will be the theme of the tour led by Aroa Romero, also a Doctor in History of Art. 

The Alhambra as an inspiration for artists is the theme of the itineraries planned for 21st, 22nd and 23rd November. Aesthetic Creation will be led by the artist José Manuel Sánchez-Darro; while the Alhambra, Source of Musical Inspiration will be led by the Coordinator of the Alhambra Project, Enrique Gámez and Alhambra as an Inspiration for Poets, by the writer and teacher, José Carlos Rosales.

The Series of Visits guided by Specialists will be brought to a close with the Essence of the Alhambra on 28th, 29th and 30th November. The Head of the Conservation Department of the Alhambra and Generalife, Francisco Lamolda, will be explaining the various milestones in the conservation of the Monument. On the following day, Saturday, Rafael de la Cruz, the Head of the Gardens and Woods Department, will be focusing on the “Green Alhambra” and the Art Historian and Technical Architect, María Cullel will be talking about Water at the Alhambra.
