Experts review in the Alhambra the last period of Al-Andalus and the conquest of America

The Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra will be, from the 28th to 30th of January, the location for an international symposium entitled La conquista sin fin. Al-Andalus y las Américas (s.XIII-XVII): destrucción y construcción de sociedades (‘The endless conquest: Al-Andalus and the Americas [18th and 17th c.]: Destruction and construction of societies‘). Over a hundred participants attend this symposium, being its main objective bringing together the different disciplines in the research of the final period of Al-Andalus, in conjunction with the initial stages of the conquest of America. The aim is to discuss on and reflect upon two processes of history, dealt within separate approaches by now.
The idea, according to the organizers of the event, is “that both processes may be discussed on the basis of common questions”. To this end, the event will count with the presence of researchers from different European and American universities.
On the first day, experts have paid tribute to the figure of Miquel Barceló, professor emeritus at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, to whom the symposium is dedicated to.
The following figures took part in the inaugural session: Miguel Gómez Oliver, Vice-rector of the University Extension, University of Granada (UGR), Teresa Cabré, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Maria del Mar Villafranca, Director of the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife, supported by the coordinators of the symposium, Antonio Malpica (UGR) and Félix Retamero (UAB). All expressed their satisfaction with the good understanding that has taken place between the various institutions, universities and the Patronato de la Alhambra.
