Experts analyze in the Alhambra the historical and cultural context of the School of Arabic Studies in Granada
The Director of the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife, María del Mar Villafranca, and the director of the School of Arabic Studies, Juan Castilla, have put this morning the “perfect end” to the acts which commemorates the 75 anniversary of the EEA, with a series of conferences where it has been debated the historical and cultural context of this almost centenary institution.
During the whole day, experts in contemporary History, History of the Art and Literature, have insisted in their conferences on the influence of the Arabism in Granada, as well as the cultural movements in Granada and in Spain in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century, period in which the School of Arabic Studies appeared.
Furthermore, two key prominent experts of that period have been paid tribute due to their knowledge in order to create this institution that belongs to the High Council of Scientific Research (CSIC): Leopoldo Torres Balbás, architect-curator of the Alhambra, who took charge of the labours of restoration and suitability of the Moorish houses to be able to shelter the institution, and the arabist Emilio García Gómez, professor of Arabic Language of the University of Granada and member of the Royal Academy of History since 1943, which took charge in marking the guidelines of the Research centre of Granada.
The professor of contemporary history of the University of Granada, Cristina Viñes; Senior Lecturer of Art History of the UGR, Ángel Isac Martínez de Carvajal, and the professor of Literature of the Autonomic university of Madrid, Mario Hernández, have been the other participants in this colloquium.
