The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife has completed the restoration of the Horno de Oro, a morisco-style house in the Albaicín quarter, which now joins the list of monumental spaces the Council offers to tourists for free-admission visits.
The Council has explained that the house was built at the end of the 15th Century and is listed as an Artistic Architectural Monument and as an Asset of Cultural Interest. After a process of restoration in which its roofs have been repaired and various structural problems have been solved, the building can now be visited free of charge.
The restoration of this Albaicin house is part of the ‘Alhambra Dobla de Oro’ (Alhambra Golden Doubloon) project under which the Council has taken responsibility for managing and restoring emblematic spaces in the city for tourist visits aimed at strengthening the links between the Alhambra and the rest of the city.
The Horno de Oro house is an excellent example of the integration of Islamic and Morisco architectural features in domestic buildings, as an extra floor was added to the original construction in the 16th Century.
During the restoration work conducted by the Council they have repaired the roofs of the building to prevent leaks and solved various structural problems to restore the gallery and the wooden ceiling decoration on the first floor, which is of high artistic value. Repair work has also been done among other things on the water system for its alberca (water tank).
The Council now manages various such monuments outside its traditional boundaries, which after restoration and refitting work will form part of the new route linking the Alhambra and the Albaicin, two World Heritage Sites, as part of a plan to strengthen the ties between the city’s two historic hills.
The visit to the Horno de Oro morisco house will initially be free and it will join the other spaces run by the Council, namely the Bañuelo Arabic baths, the Corral del Carbón, with its cultural programme, and the recently opened Dar al-Horra Palace, once the residence of the mother of Boabdil, the last Sultan of Granada, on which restoration work was also completed this month.
