A modern view of the Alhambra and the orientalism of Owen Jones, a talk in the Palace of Carlos V

A talk on English architect and designer Owen Jones (1809-1874), to be held in the Palace of Carlos V over 21-22 February next, will bring together important experts to analyse the work of the artist, considered a key figure in 19th century reform debates, in relation to the Alhambra and orientalism. Under the title Owen Jones, the Alhambra and Orientalism, the talk will be the highpoint of the exhibition Owen Jones and the Alhambra: Islamic design, discovery and vision, running until 28 February next in the Museum of Fine Arts, located on the upper floor of the Palace of Carlos V.
The seminar will be held over 21-22 February 2012, in the Palace of Carlos V, where the exhibition Owen Jones and the Alhambra: Islamic design, discovery and vision is currently running. The talks aim to contribute not only to the study of Jones himself, but also to an understanding of the important role played by the Alhambra in the reflections of many contemporary artists and architects.
Speakers at Owen Jones, the Alhambra and orientalism include María del Mar Villafranca, general director of PAG; Juan Calatrava, professor of History of Art at the University of Granada, who will also chair the sessions; José Antonio González Alcantud, professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Granada; researcher Kathryn Ferry; José Tito Rojo, curator at the University of Granada Botanic Garden; and V&A curators Mariam Rosser-Owen and Abraham Thomas, who have also, along with Juan Calatrava, commissioned the exhibition, which runs until 28 February 2012.
