The Alhambra was once again the star at a lecture last Thursday by the Director of the Monument, María del Mar Villafranca, at the Headquarters of the Spanish Army’s Training and Doctrine Centre (MADOC) in Granada. The lecture, attended by almost a hundred people, offered a different perspective of the Alhambra through its history, art and heritage.
In her speech, Villafranca embarked on a historical journey that centred on four dates: 1238, when the Sultan Muhammad designed the perimeter of the Alhambra and channelled water to the hill on which it is sited; 1492, the year of the Capitulation Agreement, when the city was taken by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella; 1870, when it was declared a National Monument and 1984 when responsibility for culture in Spain was transferred to the Regions and the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife was created.
Villafranca also had time to describe the ecosystem of which the Alhambra forms part and its important collection of Hispano-Muslim Art, which has over 200,000 pieces. She also told the audience about the influence of the romantic travellers, who were fascinated by their visit to the Monument.
