WINGED SPINDLE TREE

This section seeks to highlight each month a representative botanical species of the ornamental flora of the monument

The winged spindle tree (Euonymus alatus) is a deciduous shrub native to Eastern Asia. It is characterized by its bright red foliage in late autumn. It reaches a maximum height of 2.5 metres although it tends to grow wider rather than taller. Its stems often develop small corky “wings”, giving it a unique appearance in winter, when it is bare.

It has oval-elliptical leaves with a pointed tip and greenish flowers. Its bright red fruits include a pink seed pod with four lobes which split open to reveal orange-coloured seeds that are popular with birds. It is an ornamental species of exceptional chromatic shades. It has been introduced to the Generalife very recently. In the Fuente Peña wood, it is found in isolated and well-chosen places, thereby enabling visitors to fully enjoy the magnificent autumnal contrast.
