the African lily

the African lily (Agapanthus africanus [L.] Hoffmanns) ) rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant originally from South Africa.
It has a short stem or cluster that bears various long leaves of dark shiny green which are not normally more than 35 centimetres high. In gardens this species stands out for its long floral stipe (up to 60 cm long) crowned by a bright blue umbel inflorescence (a group of 20 to 30 flowers in umbrella formation)
This species is very frequently used as a covering plant in well-watered flowerbeds and within the shade of trees as it can bloom in semi shade. Although it was first introduced into Europe in the 17th century, it has only recently begun to be used in the gardens at the Alhambra and Generalife.
