Room of the beds ” BAYT AL- MASLAJ”

The hammam or Bath of the Palace of Comares is one of the most significant spaces in the Alhambra, in that it is the only mediaeval Islamic building in the West that remains practically intact. Known as the Royal Bath after the Christian conquest, this new “space of the month” is situated between the Palace of Comares and the Palace of the Lions and conserves all essential aspects of its original features, with only a few structural modifications resulting from a change of use and from maintenance that was more symbolic than real.
The resting area, called bayt al-maslaj or Room of the Beds, is one of the most striking spaces in the Bath and owes its name to the two slightly raised, spacious bed-chambers on either side of the main room. The room has various decorative features, such as a fountain, floor paving, columns, tile panels and plasterwork, most of which are original, although the ceilings and plasterwork were repaired and repainted with bright colours in the second half of the 19^th century.
The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife has restored the tiling on the two beds and will soon carry out complete restoration of all the tiles in the Bath.
