Maequetry Table. Decoration and technique
Dra. Gloria Aljazairi López
This recently restored marquetry table (Ref. 3880) is on temporary display to illustrate the marquetry techniques used in this piece of carpentry.
Taracea (the Spanish word for marquetry) is of Arabic etymology and means encrustation. This technique encompasses a wide range of carpentry skills typical of the particular craft tradition and geographical origin that distinguishes Granada marquetry, heir to that of the Nasrids.
A great deal of interesting technical information was obtained during the restoration of the marquetry table in relation to its construction, assembly and the materials used to decorate it, such as mother-of-pearl, bone, fine woods and encrusted metal threads. The original carpenter was clearly also a skilled turner, as can be seen in the latticework panels used to decorate part of the sides of the table.
In order to understand the conservation problems associated with a particular art or craft it is essential to study the techniques and the materials used by the original craftsmen. When restoring craft pieces, the restorers combine the knowledge acquired in this way with their professional expertise in restoration to help choose the most suitable methods and treatments.
