Brazier- A Nasrid Era Heater

The month of November has arrived and with it the cold weather and the need to find the best way of keeping warm inside our homes.

Today we have many and varied heating systems for heating our homes, but what did they do in the past? How did people heat the different rooms in their houses in the 14th and 15th centuries?

The answer to this question is the brazier, the Piece of the Month for November. The brazier was a key part of any house as it enabled them to get through the harsh winters. We will also be looking at other equally important functions of these pieces and of the different types, sizes and materials that they came in.

We will end up by analysing our chosen “Piece of the Month” at the Museum of the Alhambra; the brazier with Reference Nº:106. Its most characteristic features are its large size, the foil-shaped interior and its exterior decoration, based on very simple geometric motifs, formed by parallel and zigzag lines.
