The School of Arabic Studies in his historical and cultural context
The Board of the Alhambra and the Generalife and the School of Arabic Studies (EEA) organize a series of conferences, which commemorates the 75 anniversary of the EEA, celebrated in 2008. The act will be celebrated on the 18th of February, in the Assembly hall of the Palace of Carlos V, under the title “The School of Arabic Studies in his historical and cultural context”.
The experts insist in the influence of the Arabism in Granada, as well as the cultural movements in Granada and in Spain in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century, when the EEA was created. Furthermore, it will be emphasized two key prominent experts of those moments, who put their enterprising spirit and their knowledge to create this institution that belongs to the High Council of Scientific Research (CSIC): Leopoldo Torres Balbás, architect-curator of the Alhambra, who took charge of the labours of restoration and suitability of the Moorish houses to be able to shelter the institution, and the arabist Emilio García Gómez, professor of Arabic Language of the University of Granada and member of the Royal Academy of History from 1943, which took charge in marking the guidelines of the Research centre of Granada.
The relation of the Board of the Alhambra and the Generalife with the School of Arabic Studies was very narrow from the beginning. Joined to the desire to take part in the above-mentioned commemoration, this has generated the organization of this series of conferences. The EEA has the headquarters in the Houses of the Chapiz, set of two Moorish houses has been declared property of cultural interest, which is placed in the neighbourhood of the Albaicín in Granada.
The participation in this series is free, until capacity is fully completed. The people interested has to send their information, before the 15th of February, to the following e-mail: difusion.pag@juntadeandalucia.es.
