The Albaicín, an intimate view
This excellent exhibit of contemporary photographs of the Albaicín district in Granada originates in a project by photographer Raúl Montanós that started in 2004. It is now presented in the neighbouring Alhambra as part of the commemoration of the 30th and 20th Anniversary, respectively, of the declaration of the Alhambra and Generalife and the Albaicín as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The work, which benefited from the collaboration of many anonymous persons, was a search through time via manifold journeys within the geographical area of the Albaicín. The passage of time, of history and the memory retained thereof, pervade this millennial district through its streets and the blend of Islamic and Castilian architecture, leaving us with a unique cultural legacy. It was also a search through the lives that inhabit this place, nourish it and enrich it day by day in an incomparable way. It was a long journey in which the artist tried to penetrate, by means of his lens, into an everyday yet intimate Albaicín, which only reveals what it wants, always in a fragmented way, creating a special relationship between the viewer and the viewee.
