Natural Treasures of the World. A marvellous journey through UNESCO Natural Heritage.
The places declared by UNESCO as “Natural Heritage Sites” are considered worthy of special attention and protection because of their exceptional importance for mankind’s common legacy. The Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was signed in 1972 and created a list of places of extraordinary universal importance whose preservation should be the responsibility of all humanity. Since then increasing efforts have been made to protect these exceptional ecosystems. According to UNESCO, in order to be classified as a Natural Heritage site, a property must:
• Contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance.
• Be outstanding examples representing major stages of earth’s history, including the record of life, significant on-going geological processes in the development of landforms or significant geomorphic or physiographic features.
• Be outstanding examples of significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the course of the evolution of ecosystems.
• Contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those that contain threatened species of Outstanding Universal Value from the point of view of science and conservationism.
The places displayed in this exhibition meet some or all of these requirements and are a selection of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. The pictures are organized by continent in this order: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. There is also a catalogue to accompany the exhibition with over 200 photographs accompanied by an introduction by Joaquín Araújo and texts by Pedro Molina and Ana Belén Berroca
