in the Alhambra

The Alhambra will be paying tribute to the Andalusian sculptor Juan Cristóbal (1896-1961) with an exhibition of a selection of his most representative works. The exhibition will be installed in the temporary exhibition room at the Granada Fine Arts Museum in the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra, and at the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation on the same hill as the Alhambra. It will contain about 60 sculptures as well as drawings and documents of interest. Most of the pieces have been selected from the collection belonging to Juan Cristóbal’s family normally displayed at the Palace of Villena, in Cadalso de los Vidrios near Madrid, a historical monument that the sculptor bought in a state of ruin and spent his life gradually restoring. The pieces from this collection will be accompanied by others from different sources belonging to both public and private collections.

Different works of art by other artists, above all painters, will also be exhibited. These will evoke the different contexts in which the artist worked during his career, such as his training, artists with whom he shared a similar aesthetic or subject matter, or friendship, and will capture other moments or phases of 20th-century Spanish culture. This brief journey through the biography and career of Juan Cristóbal will enable the visitor to form an idea of the definitive discourse of the exhibition, which is basically chronological although questions of subject matter and artistic genre are also taken into account.
