Figurative representation in Muslim Art
In figurative representation, i.e. the representation of people and animals, there are both similarities and differences between Islamic and Christian art, which are manifest for example in the art of the Nasrids in the Kingdom of Granada and the Christian art of the Trastámara dynasty in the Kingdom of Castile. The representation of human and animal figures was limited in Islamic and Christian art, both religious and profane, due to prohibitions of “graven” images. However in practice such images did exist in both Christian and Islamic art, as can be seen in art produced under the Nasrid and Trastámara dynasties, although fewer examples survive from the Nasrid period due among other things to the destruction of mosques and other secular buildings.
