in the Alhambra

The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife and Centro José Guerrero are organizing the exhibition Desbordamiento de Val del Omar (“Val del Omar Overflow”). The display will take place from May 13 to July 4 at two venues: the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra and the Centro José Guerrero. The exhibition will focus on the films of the artist, as well as his contributions to the cinematic techniques and photographs of his time.
Being an avant-garde artist, José Val del Omar (Granada 1904 – Madrid 1982) was considered to be the most important filmmaker of experimental cinema in Spain. He combined his great artistic talent with technological innovation. One of his most outstanding contributions is known by its initials: PLAT – Picto-Luminic-Audio-Tactile art.
His work was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War and the following Franco era, but nevertheless, Val del Omar is considered as one of the most important examples of the film industry of the 20th century. In fact, José Val del Omar was one of the vanguard European technologists in audio-visual projects and patents: from variable-angle time lens (actual zoom) of 1928, passing to “diaphonic sound” and “apanoramic overflow of the image”, to multimedia explorations with video, laser and other techniques in the 70s and early 80s.
