Course on how to access to archives, to documents and to their information
Andalusian Archivers Association, in collaboration with the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute (IAPH), organises a course on How to access to archives, to documents and to their information. It will be hold from the 7th to the 9th of November 2012 at the Historical-Artistic Complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife.
The new Andalusian act on documents 7/2011 specifically states that “The main purpose of public archives is to be an institution at the service of the citizens and to guarantee their rights according to democratic values and public management transparency” (reasons explained at section III, paragraph 6).
One of the main purposes of the Archives is therefore to give access to documents and to spread their information. But offering this service to the citizens is not an easy task since a balance between this citizens’ right and the obligation to protect confidential data has to be found. Besides, the complexity of the regulations on this issue in Spain makes it even more difficult. For these reasons, frequent doubts and fears of jeopardizing citizens’ rights or the imperative of protecting confidential data may hamper the agility and efficiency of the access to information.
The new act on Transparency offers new solutions to this controversy but it may also arise new doubts that professionals must be able to answer in order to perform their duties safely, adequately and responsibly.
